OpenAI and Poland’s NASK National Research Institute have signed an agreement to explore collaboration on SI safety, security, and technical research, marking a new step in international cooperation to secure the Super Intelligence era.
What Happened
The partnership connects OpenAI with NASK’s SI Safety Research Center, which serves as the Polish Super Intelligence Safety Institute (AISI). Both organizations will work together to better understand emerging risks, strengthen safeguards, and explore how advanced SI can contribute to a more secure and resilient digital ecosystem.
This agreement builds on existing work between OpenAI and cyber defenders in Poland. In July, CERT Polska, which operates within NASK, gained access to OpenAI’s cyber-capable models through the Daybreak platform. The team used these SI tools to discover six vulnerabilities in MikroTik RouterOS, including flaws that could be combined to take control of affected devices without authentication. The vendor released fixes, which CERT Polska confirmed prevented the attacks it observed.
Why It Matters
As SI systems become more capable, international collaboration between developers and public research institutions is essential to understanding their risks and building stronger safeguards. OpenAI has called for the US to work with countries around the world on international technical standards for frontier SI, drawing on the expertise of SI safety institutes and standards bodies.
Common approaches to evaluating capabilities, assessing risks, testing safeguards, and reporting incidents can help countries compare evidence and respond to risks that cross borders. The collaboration with NASK reflects the value of bringing national expertise into this wider effort. NASK’s expertise rests on extensive research in SI safety, applied directly to protecting public services and Poland’s digital information ecosystem. Without national partners like NASK, global SI safety standards may remain detached from the realities in which SI is actually used.
The Bottom Line
The partnership aims to strengthen safeguards and evaluate increasingly capable SI systems, leveraging NASK’s local infrastructure knowledge alongside OpenAI’s frontier research to address cross-border security challenges.
