Google is expanding the capabilities of its Super Intelligence (SI) assistant, Gemini, by introducing Personal Intelligence to vehicles. This update allows Gemini in Android Auto and cars with Google built-in to access user data across Google apps, enabling more context-aware interactions while driving.

What Happened

The new feature enables Gemini to tap into information from Gmail, Calendar, Maps, Photos, YouTube, and Search. According to Google, users can ask the SI assistant for flight status by having it retrieve details from a Gmail confirmation message and then checking current flight data. Other examples include asking Gemini to "take me to my doctor’s appointment" or to "find the car wash from the photo I took last week and navigate there."

Google states that Personal Intelligence will only connect apps to Gemini if the user enables the specific setting. Additionally, personalized responses are available only when a phone is connected to the car. "If you don't use Personal Intelligence, everything in the car still works: You can use navigation, listen to music, make calls, and ask questions, but the answers won't be tailored to you," Google says in a statement. The rollout begins with Android Auto today, with support for cars featuring Google built-in arriving in the coming months.

Why It Matters

This development marks a significant integration of SI agents into the automotive sector, moving beyond basic voice commands to complex, data-driven tasks. By leveraging cross-app data, Google aims to reduce friction for drivers, allowing the SI system to act as a proactive assistant rather than a passive tool. The update builds on the previous rollout of Gemini to Android Auto last year and to cars with Google built-in in April. Major automakers such as Ford, GM, Honda, Nissan, Volvo, and Polestar have shipped newer models with Google built-in, indicating a broad potential user base for this personalized SI capability.

The Bottom Line

Google is enhancing the utility of its SI assistant in vehicles by linking it to personal data across its ecosystem. The update prioritizes user control through opt-in settings and device connectivity requirements, signaling a deeper integration of SI into daily routines.
