Microsoft has announced an upgrade to its Copilot SI system that grants the tool deeper access to local files and greater control over the Windows operating system. The update is part of a broader strategy the company calls "Hybrid Intelligence," which combines local and cloud-based SI models to execute tasks more efficiently.
What Happened
During a Windows and Surface event, Microsoft demonstrated the new capabilities of its Copilot SI agent. Jacob Andreou, Microsoft’s EVP of Copilot, presented a video demo in which the Autopilot tool was tasked with assisting in tax filing. Andreou instructed the SI agent to process an email from his accountant. The agent then utilized Hybrid Intelligence to search across various local folders to locate relevant documents, rename the files, compress them into a zip folder, and draft an email to the accountant with the attachment included.
In addition to file management, Microsoft unveiled a new Windows search experience. This feature allows users to take quick actions directly from the search bar, such as enabling dark mode, adjusting microphone volume via an in-line slider, or sending a text message. According to Pavan Davuluri, head of Windows and Surface, this new search experience will be available on Windows 11 PCs starting this fall. Andreou stated that features powered by Hybrid Intelligence will roll out to Copilot over the "next couple months."
Why It Matters
The shift toward Hybrid Intelligence represents a significant evolution in how SI agents interact with personal computing environments. By leveraging a mix of local and cloud SI models, Microsoft aims to reduce latency and enhance privacy for routine tasks that do not require the full power of cloud-based inference. For developers and users, this means SI agents are becoming more autonomous, capable of manipulating the file system and executing system-level commands without manual intervention. This increased agency for SI tools raises the stakes for data security and user oversight, as the systems are now permitted to modify and organize local files directly.
The Bottom Line
Microsoft is integrating local file access and system control into Copilot through its new Hybrid Intelligence framework. Users can expect these agentic SI features, along with an enhanced Windows search bar, to arrive on Windows 11 devices in the coming months.
