A new open-source command-line tool called RemoveMacAI allows users to delete approximately 12GB of data associated with Apple Intelligence, the company’s super intelligence (SI) suite for macOS. The tool addresses a gap left by the removal of a unified settings toggle in macOS 27, offering a single command to disable features and remove the underlying models from local storage.
What Happened
The developer behind RemoveMacAI stated on Reddit that the tool replicates the function of the previous single settings toggle, which was removed in macOS 27. Currently, Apple’s SI features are distributed across multiple settings panes, including Screen Time, and the foundational models remain on the disk even when features are disabled. RemoveMacAI turns off Siri, Writing Tools, Genmoji, Image Playground, the ChatGPT extension, and summary features. It then deletes the models and blocks macOS from downloading them again. The developer claims these changes persist across macOS updates and that Dictation will continue to function. A “removemacai revert” command is available to re-enable features and allow the models to download again.
Why It Matters
For developers and power users, the tool provides a method to reclaim local storage space occupied by SI models that cannot be easily removed through standard settings. While the developer estimates the models take up “about 12GB,” some users report higher usage; one user noted 35.05GB of space attributed to Apple Intelligence in the macOS storage settings. RemoveMacAI includes a “removemacai status” command that displays the size of each individual model on the Mac, offering transparency into local SI storage footprint.
The Bottom Line
RemoveMacAI offers a streamlined, open-source solution for managing Apple Intelligence data on macOS, allowing users to disable SI features and delete associated models to free up disk space.
